When my wife Colleen and I decided to open a functional medicine practice, we knew we wanted to do more than just treat symptoms — we wanted to create a full-circle approach to health. We focus on pain management, hormone balance, weight loss, hydration therapy, massage therapy, PRP treatments, and more. But one thing that sets us apart is how we’re bringing technology into every part of the patient experience.
My background isn’t in healthcare. I spent ten years working as a U.S. Marshal and later became a software engineer after graduating from General Assembly. While I ultimately found my greatest success in the music industry as a producer and songwriter, my technical training never left me. I’ve always believed that digital tools, when used right, can make things better — more efficient, more accessible, and more personalized.
That mindset is exactly what we’re applying to our functional medicine clinic.
Why Functional Medicine?
Before I dive into tech, I want to quickly talk about why we chose to open a functional medicine practice in the first place. Both Colleen and I were frustrated with the traditional healthcare model. Too often, it feels like patients are rushed through appointments, prescribed something, and sent on their way — without really getting to the root cause of what’s going on.
Functional medicine takes a different approach. It’s about treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. That means spending more time with patients, looking at lifestyle factors, diet, hormone levels, and stress, and building long-term treatment plans. It’s proactive, not reactive. And that’s the kind of healthcare we believe in.
Where Tech Comes In
The challenge with functional medicine is that it requires more communication, more tracking, and more personalization than most conventional systems are designed for. That’s where my software background came in handy. From day one, I started looking for ways we could integrate digital tools to streamline the experience — not just for us as providers, but for our patients too.
Here are a few ways we’re using tech to enhance our practice:
1. Patient Portals and Onboarding
We’ve set up an easy-to-use digital onboarding system. When new patients book an appointment, they receive access to a personalized portal where they can complete intake forms, upload lab results, and track their medical history. No more clipboards in the waiting room, and no more repeating the same story to different people.
It also helps us come to the first appointment fully prepared — so we can spend more time talking about solutions instead of asking basic questions.
2. Telemedicine Integration
While we love seeing patients in person, we know that life gets busy. That’s why we’ve built telemedicine directly into our platform. Patients can schedule virtual follow-ups, consults, or check-ins from anywhere, using secure video conferencing.
This is especially helpful for ongoing treatments like hormone therapy or weight loss plans, where we need to monitor progress and adjust protocols over time.
3. Data Tracking and Wearable Integration
One of the coolest things we’re experimenting with is syncing wearable devices — like fitness trackers or smartwatches — with patient files. This lets us monitor key health data like sleep, activity, heart rate, and more in real time.
It’s optional, of course, but many of our patients find it motivating to see their progress laid out in black and white. And for us, it’s an extra layer of insight that helps us personalize their treatment even further.
4. Automated Reminders and Follow-Ups
Let’s face it — people are busy, and health often takes a back seat. We’ve built automated text and email reminders for things like upcoming appointments, hydration therapy schedules, supplement routines, and follow-up labs. These nudges go a long way in helping patients stay consistent with their plans, which leads to better results.
5. Educational Content and Support
We’ve also created a private online library for patients, with videos, articles, and guides on everything from testosterone replacement therapy to anti-inflammatory diets. Instead of leaving appointments feeling overwhelmed, patients can go home and explore the information at their own pace.
Our goal is to make people feel informed, not confused — and digital content helps us extend the conversation beyond the office.
The Bigger Picture
At the end of the day, technology isn’t a replacement for good care — it’s a tool that helps us provide better care. By automating the basics, we free up time to focus on what really matters: building relationships, understanding patient goals, and making thoughtful, long-term health plans.
As someone who came from a world of coding, debugging, and user experience design, I see healthcare through a different lens. I believe clinics should operate with the same ease and clarity that good software does. Things should make sense. They should be user-friendly. And they should evolve with the times.
We’re still growing. Every month we’re adding new treatments, refining our processes, and listening to what our patients need. But one thing we know for sure is that technology will always be a core part of our approach.
Functional medicine is about treating the whole person — and in today’s world, that includes the digital side of life too. We’re proud to build a practice that’s not just modern in how it treats the body, but also in how it connects with people.
If you’re looking for a clinic that blends the warmth of human care with the power of smart technology, I think you’ll like what we’re building.
